What to See & Do

Malham Cove and Gordale

Malham is a small village, in the Pennines, at the southern base of the Yorkshire Dales. It's a pretty place, surrounded by limestone dry-stone walls, & with a stream running right through the middle of the village.

Malham Cove is a huge curving amphitheatre shaped cliff formation of limestone rock. The vertical face of the cliff is about 260 feet high. The top of the cove is a large area of limestone pavement.

Gordale Scar is a spectacular gorge, complete with waterfalls, cut right into the limestone hillside. The gorge was produced by water from melting glaciers sometime over the last three million years. Gordale Scar is one of the highlights of a visit to Malham.

Malham Tarn is a nature reserve area, owned by the National Trust. Nearby is Tarn House, where the Field Studies Council runs educational courses. A stream from Malham Tarn disappears into the ground through sink holes in the limestone, and reappears at Airehead Springs.

Yorkshire Dales Falconry and Conservation Centre

Since the centre's creation in 1991, it has provided the public a glimpse into the sport of falconry as well as an insight to various birds of prey. However, the centre's primary goal is to assist the re-population of birds of prey around the world. The centre is part of a world wide breeding and conservation programme that hopes that one day, all of the species can be safe in their natural habitats around the world.

The facilities for visitors include:

* Main Arena, for demonstrations and courses
* Reception and Admissions
* Mrs Feather's Tearoom
* Henry's Hedgehog Playground
* Lecture Room for Educational Tours
* Gift Shop

Ingleborough

Ingleborough is the second highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales. It is one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, the other two being Whernside and Pen-y-ghent.

Ingleborough is frequently climbed as part of the Three Peaks Challenge, which is a 24 mile (38 km) circular challenge walk starting and finishing in Horton in Ribblesdale. If done anti-clockwise Ingleborough is the last hill climbed, and ascent is from Chapel-le-Dale.

Settle Carlisle Railway

The 72 mile route from Settle to Carlisle takes you on a journey through the magnificent Yorkshire Dales, over the 24 arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct before plunging in to the longest tunnel on the line at Blea Moor. Emerging onto the side of Dentdale, the line leaves the Dales at Garsdale and makes it way through the gentle, lush rolling hills of the Eden Valley, with rural villages and market towns before arriving at the great border city of Carlisle.
